Gallery Clarendon Joins Market Common Clarendon

What was once a vacant space is now a vibrant art gallery in Arlington, Virginia's Clarendon neighborhood. Gallery Clarendon is housed inside thriving Market Common Clarendon shopping center.

The Market Common Clarendon team wanted to provide something that would attract more visitors to the center. They reached out to the Arlington Artists Alliance to occupy the vacant space. Formerly a restaurant, the pop-up art gallery now takes full advantage of the 9,500 SF, two-level space. Each floor consists of gallery and studio space that showcases local artists' work.

The space is located on a prominent corner, and while we consider the right merchant for the space, I wanted to activate the space,” said Hilary Shure, Marketing and Events Manager. "I worked with the Alliance on another event and it seemed like a natural fit — they have been great collaborators!

What makes this gallery special is the abundance of artistic talent available to the public. The gallery features artwork from members of the Arlington Artists Alliance, a non-profit group with more than 150 members. Art classes are offered in studios on the second floor and local art showcases and fresh exhibits are presented each month to create an ever-changing, buzz-worthy, lively environment.

The response has been overly positive from the community," said Sandi Parker, Arlington Artists Alliance managing director of galleries. "We had more than 500 people at our soft opening in July. People commented that they are thrilled there is local art in Clarendon! The gallery features work in all media including painting, drawing, pastel, collage, sculpture, ceramics, photography, jewelry, woodwork, glass work, metal work, and fiber art.

On September 15, the gallery hosted its grand opening, which was as successful as its soft opening in July. There were activities for guests of all ages, with painting stations and art demonstrations. The gallery brought the day to a close with a wine reception where guests had the opportunity to mingle with local artists.

Each artist has his or her own database of patrons, which helps to attract people to the shopping center. Also, special events are held daily in the classrooms upstairs along with a guest artist working onsite. Each element plays an integral part in maintaining the gallery’s success.

Admission to the gallery is free and pieces are available for purchase. To stay informed about Gallery Clarendon, click here. For more information on Market Common Clarendon, click here.
