Safeway and Albertsons shoppers can help fight childhood hunger during April in the second year of an anti-hunger effort, the companies said Friday.

The campaign, entitled "Hunger Is," is jointly sponsored by The Safeway Foundation and the Entertainment Industry Foundation, with actress Viola Davis serving as its spokeswoman for the second year.

“After an incredibly successful inaugural year, I am grateful to keep the momentum [going] in finding a solution to a problem that is too often forgotten,” Davis said. “We have the opportunity to change so many young lives for the better, and I look forward to the day when this is no longer an issue in our country.”

Funds raised through the initiative will go toward programs focused on eradicating childhood hunger and improving health-related outcomes for hungry children and their families, Safeway said.

According to Christy Duncan-Anderson, executive director of The Safeway Foundation, “The generous support from our customers during our first year has been astonishing and demonstrates the power of our communities. Childhood hunger is an issue that touches all of us, and we are committed to changing that for good.”
