Young Bookworms — a children’s bookstore stocked exclusively with works from self-published authors — recently opened the doors to its flagship location at Regency’s Woodmen Plaza in Colorado Springs, CO. Adorned with colorful book covers, bright blue lounge chairs, a cozy fireplace, and plenty of children’s toys, the shop is the brainchild of owner Joni McCoy — who happened to write her first book nearly two years ago.
With roots tracing back to her late mother — who tragically passed away after a six-year battle with Alzheimer’s in 2019 — the bookstore was inspired by the countless children’s books and stories McCoy read aloud while acting as her mother’s caretaker. The 63-year-old author and shop owner has since self-published more than 30 books, with no plans of stopping anytime soon.
Being what McCoy refers to as a “No-Spine” bookstore, Young Bookworms currently carries more than 300 books representing nearly 150 authors, and every book cover can be found on display. Additionally, Joni has plans to utilize the 1,144 SF space to host author visits and regular story times, facilitate book clubs, and hold educational classes for aspiring young authors who are interested in self-publishing.
We could not be more thrilled to welcome Young Bookworms to Woodmen Plaza," said Tricia Freeman, Senior Leasing Agent. "This flagship location is not only an excellent addition to the center's merchandising mix, but has already proven to be an incredible asset to the local community at-large.
Situated in North Colorado Springs with a mix of national retailers and a strong daytime population, Woodmen Plaza is home to a star-studded merchant lineup including King Soopers, Hallmark, GNC, Fat Shack, Pinspiration Arts & Crafts, Furry Friends Pet Store, Papa John's, Kumon Math & Reading Center, True Martial Arts, Jimmy John’s, Tsing Tao House, Meeker Music, and more.
