Cameron Village - The Fresh Market Expands Underground

The Fresh Market at Cameron Village

What was once a string of edgy underground nightclubs called the “Village Subway,” will soon become an extension of The Fresh Market at Regency Centers’ Cameron Village.

The Triangle Business Journal recently reported on the expansion stating, “The Fresh Market had in spring 2014 signed a new lease commitment to extend its stay at Cameron Village and to take over the former Village Subway space below its store location.”

Regency Centers’ John Pharr, Senior Market Officer elaborates, “The Fresh Market will be taking over a portion of the available 30,000 square foot basement that has been empty since the Subway closed down in 1984,” says Pharr. “Due to the location and the angle of the store, the tenant has been using the area as a receiving dock, so it really made sense to move the food prep and storage space down as well.”

The expansion will provide The Fresh Market with more retail space and increase the efficiency of operations. Throughout construction, the retailer will remain open for business.

Before construction starts, Cameron Village will pay homage to the underground scene that once housed bands like R.E.M, The Ramones, Joan Jett, Sonic Youth, and Violent Femmes before they were mainstream. The venue will be open for one night only on May 16 to raise money for Inter-faith Food Shuttle’s Backpack Buddies program.
