A martini and a new suit: Nordstrom's swanky flagship store remodel includes bar, cafe

Nordstrom specializes in staying up to date on the latest trends, so it only makes sense that the Seattle retailer’s stores would as well.

Nordstrom is undertaking a major renovation of its downtown Seattle flagship store, as well as two other flagship stores in San Francisco and Chicago.

There's even a swanky bar in the Seattle store, which opened Monday, serving craft cocktails and small plates.

Shoppers expect different things from flagship stores, said Jamie Nordstrom, president of stores. Nordstrom wants to make its key stores an attraction for visitors in addition to a place to shop.

“We came to the realization that true flagship stores…are destinations for people around the world,” Nordstrom said at a media tour of the Seattle store Friday.

Nearly 50 percent of customers at such stores are international, he said.

“We’re creating an experience that by definition [customers] cannot find in Bellevue Square or Southcenter,” or other non-flagship stores, Nordstrom said.

The flagship stores have a sleek, modern and open feel with more natural light and eateries on nearly every floor.

Nordstrom declined to disclose how much the company is spending on the remodels, but did say the cost is “a lot, these are not cheap projects.”
