Thousands Attend the Whole Foods Market Opening at Shops on Main

Whole Foods Grand Opening with aisles filled with customers and their carts

The line to get into the new Schererville, IN, Whole Foods Market wound through the packed parking lot and back toward the Omni Health & Fitness.

Thousands showed up Wednesday morning for the grand opening of the 40,000-square-foot market at 199 U.S. 41 in Shops on Main. Some took off work to be there.

The crowd and its expectations made for a carnival atmosphere. People waiting to get in wrote poetry, ranted how there's too much sugar in the American diet, wore fedoras and bacon T-shirts, and cooed at babies wrapped in slings. A kid wore a Batman mask. A band played an instrumental version of Journey's "Don't Stop Believing" as the first wide-eyed customers filed in.
